I tried so hard to be “American” and refused to speak/learn Korean for a long time. I regret that so much…
Liz Joo
01:33:11
Does a 203 group exist for Asian-Americans? Especially among the elementary schools, some have virtually no Asian Americans while others have many.

How would you recommend parents who do not speak English to get involved in their children’s schools?
Michelle Sussman (she/her)
01:43:35
Is there an initiative to attract/hire more Asian teachers as role models for our Asian children? My son has asked me why he’s only had one teacher of color in the district.
Stephanie Aspan
01:43:50
Yes Melvin! "The responsibility for cultivating and sustaining partnerships among school, home, and community rests primarily with school staff, especially school leaders" (K. Mapp, 2017)
Denika McMillen
01:44:16
I agree with you, Melvin. Thanks for your comment.
Cindy Ontiveros
01:44:33
Thank you Melvin. I truly appreciate that!
Liz Joo

I would recommend to the parents who do not speak English to start by attending general HSA meetings. I have found there are so many ways to volunteer at school that need bodies, like setting up book fair, helping at the library, fun run, running club, etc. And just the presence means a lot to HSA board members.
Michelle Sussman (she/her)
